There is a large family, the Cyprinidae, of which the Goldfish belong to. The Cyprinidae includes many other types of fish such as the koi, barbs, danios, rasboras, American minnows. Many of the breeds, however, are warmwater species while the goldfish and koi are actually coldwater fish.

When upon looking for fish to purchase, normally you will see Latin names used in the aquarium literature to describe many varieties of fish. Scientific communities decided to help us out and make it easier for us to understand by giving common names as well as the scientific name. For example, naming the flora and and fauna (plants and animals.) This was used to know which breed was which for them, a way to seperate one breed from another.  The scientific name for goldfish is Carassius auratus. What a name! I couldn't even pronounce that if I tried to.

"The goldfish is your perfect pet. You don't hafta walk it. It don't smell, it don't bark, and before you get too tired of it...it dies."
-Archie Bunker

Unfortunally, Archie Bunker's philosopy is blunt, however, normally true to an extent. More than likely either you or your child has brought home a goldfish from school and we dump it in a bowl or some kind of container then add some tap water. A few days later,we find the fish deceased and either your parent or you (depending on who brought home the fish) ran to the nearest pet store in attempt to find an exact look-a-like of that fish before the child comes home.
This could be an opportunity to cease, and teach our children about death and dying, but at the same time we also realize how painful this will be for our child and ponder the thought. We don't have to teach them with the death of a goldfish, it is just a mere idea.
